    blah… Windows - April 22, 2011 by sicks

I have to submit to using Windows at work. The server reported to our admins that I had never logged in, so they disabled my account. I have logged in every day for the week that I have been here. I hate Windows.

Linux netbook distro first looks. - April 10, 2011 by sicks

I have been using ubuntu netbook remix.  It works great, but it was getting stale.  Maybe it is the brown tinge to everything, I am not sure.  But I figured I’d put a short review of the distros that I decided to try.

I settled on SLAX and Crunchbang (Openbox and Xfce).  Jolli is also highly recommended, I just don’t want to mess with cloud computing right now (traveling a lot and no steady internet connection).  Mandriva gets mentioned a lot as well, but that is the distro I switched to ubuntu from after having used it for years, so I’m going to leave it for a little later.

Let’s start with SLAX.  I had to use unetbootin to install the ISO to usb drive, because the install script failed.  Then the boot sequence would freeze at starting X11.  I found a work around for xorg.config mucking up the display settings (which lead to the lockup), and got to the desktop.  But no wifi…  Deal breaker for most people.

On to Crunchbang.  Crunchbang loads like a champ and the wifi was on in no-time.  The Openbox interface will take some getting used to.  There is also a #!(Crunchbang) Xfce edition, if you prefer that window manager.  I’m playing with it now.  I’ll most likely give a proper review when I’ve had some time to fiddle with it more.

Also, I completed the howto for fixing the mon0 channel -1 bug.

Ubuntu 10 left side window control fix - May 15, 2010 by sicks

After 18 years of clicking the top right corner of a window to close it, left side window controls got on my nerves.  Apparently they set it up that way because in an upcoming release, they want to use the top right for something else (an annoyance meter maybe?). I don’t know, but I changed mine back to top right, thanks to this blog post:
HOWTO move the controls back to the top right

    Enjoy!
